Our landscapes are an integral part of our lives–when they work well, we feel good; when they don’t, they create stress. Having a clear vision and pragmatic plan simplifies landscape improvements and ensures you are investing resources wisely. As a fourth-generation PNW gardener and UW grad in both landscape architecture and environmental horticulture/urban forestry, I bring an experienced combination of local knowledge, design, science and pragmatism.

“Heidi is a listener and has great vision about the bigger picture in landscape design. She helped us break down our overwhelming project into manageable pieces saving us a lot of trouble and money. She understands how a landscape serves the people and is great at designing with kids in mind.”

-Adam & Alyson

My focus is connecting people to their landscape so they can be a source of enjoyment. This could mean sculpting overgrown rhododendrons and underplanting with fresh ground-cover or it could mean ripping them out entirely and starting over with a new design. Oftentimes the layout of a site functions poorly. I might sketch up quick design options on-site for your review, other times I can simply point out a few strategic, high-impact improvements to make. Many clients wish to do all, or a portion of the work themselves with few or only simple drawings needed, other times a package of bid drawings is required to submit to contractors.

It is common for clients to overlook impactful details, while stressing about items that are comparatively inconsequential.

Consultations are useful for sorting out issues. Garden coaching is a great fit for clients who seek to be empowered but lack sufficient know-how. Coaching gives you access to my experience and knowledge with encouraging instruction that is responsive to your needs; it may include a hands-on pruning lesson, plant ID, understanding what to do when, figuring out where to plant the flowers you brought home from the nursery, design troubleshooting and much more.

Many clients aren’t sure exactly what they want or how to go about it, they just know they want positive change in their landscape.

Your specific needs determine the project scope. When I assess your site and goals, your individual parameters are the priority, from budget to personal aesthetic. Each project is different in terms of its breadth, level of detail and also its long-term maintenance regime–most clients value efficiency and practicality without sacrificing aesthetics. To understand how my expertise can benefit your project, get in touch and we can discuss the best path forward. I look forward to contributing to your landscape!

-Caine & Kathrine

“Heidi helped us transform our blank-slate back yard into a landscaped space that we are excited to see flourish over the coming years. After a thorough evaluation of our yard, soil, and light conditions, we worked together to develop a plan that would meet our needs. We appreciated that Heidi gave us plenty of options to consider, all the while focusing on plants that will thrive in our area and contribute to the local ecosystem. We plan to work with Heidi again in the future when we are ready to tackle our front yard!”

- Kelley & Brian

“Heidi thoughtfully and creatively applied her technical skills to provide us with great options for our yard design. She took into account things we never considered and educated us on the practical realities of the project, all while keeping in mind a beautiful and useful result.”

- Tera & Eric

I really had no idea how to turn my yard into a garden when a friend recommended Heidi. She came up with a plan we could implement over several years within my modest budget. She helped me find plants I would enjoy, and suggested spots in the yard where they could thrive. Her expertise matched perfectly what I needed and I couldn’t be happier with the result (so far!).”
