Magnuson Park Springtime Stewardship
Squad was kept busy with the full suite of restoration activities working at the north end of Magnuson Park with the Green Seattle Partnership, we watered, weeded, mulched and planted. The dry spring has been lovely for stewardship but the young native plantings already needed some watering already, particularly ones planted late in the season-typically planting season ends in March, with fall being the ideal time for roots to settle in during the friendly damp weather. We look forward to returning for summer stewardship/swim events.
Weeding Weeding Weeding on Riverton Creek Under the Cottonwoods

(4th) Wed 6/23 - Cottonwood Corner, Green Tukwila Partnership
Squad tended the native plants at Cottonwood Corner with the Green Tukwila Partnership. The spring weather brought the usual explosion in weed growth since the last work party and there was much work to be done removing noxious species like holly, blackberry, bindweed and ivy. Many invasive bluebells were dug up before their seeds could spread! Horesetails are native, but so numerous that we pulled them away from smaller natives trying to get established as well as out of pathways.

Squad helped continue significant past-efforts by the Duwamish Alive Coalition at North Winds Weir by picking-up trash and planting Carex lyngbyei. Low-tides must be anticipated so that the muddy planing zone won’t be inundated with water.
This site is very important for Chinook salmon, as it is the transition zone between fresh water and salt water. Additionally, there is off-channel habitat for young fry to shelter and adjust.
