The Green Seattle Partnership hosted Stewardship Squad along the Burke-Gilman Trail for some native planting and a bit of noxious weed removal. Taking advantage of the cool dormant season, we planted a wide variety of native species in the woodland habitat along the trail including grand fir, coast rhododendron (our state flower), sword fern, salal, serviceberry and more.
The soil is variable due to the corridor’s former status as a railroad, we even found a thick rusted old piece of iron. The trail is looking beautiful, many users passing by expressed appreciation.
A big thanks to the dedicated neighborhood Forest Stewards who have been tending their section of the trail for many many years. Their hard work shows and benefits thousands and thousands of users, not to mention the ecosystem as a whole. Their recent work at this very site was highlighted by local UW Atmos Sci Professor Cliff Mass on his informative blog.
