Pritchard Beach Morning Glory Pull & Mulch
Squad braved the heat wave to spend some time with long time stewards at Pritchard Beach Park on Lake Washington. Having six days in a row of 90 degree weather is pretty warm for Seattle but we worked in the shade and of course cooled off in the lake! This is such a neat site to work in, click on the location tag for more info and past events!
Planting & Mulching the Understory at Northacres Park
Northacres Park was still hanging onto to its fall leaves on one of the first cold days in an otherwise warm autumn. Squad helped with a variety of stewardship tasks around the various restoration areas underneath the lovely mature second growth forest. Small native plants were put in, mulch was spread and weeds were dug. In what may have been a first, large log rounds were moved from a tree that had come down; their weight really necessitated teamwork to transport them!
Green Seattle Partnership hosts many other regular events at this park and so many more, contributing to the wellbeing of our public green spaces. Consider seeing if your local natural areas have work parties you can sign up for as well.
Happy Holidays to everyone and see you in the New Year!
Beach Restoration at Discovery Park
A major atmospheric river didn’t stop Squad from getting out for some beach revegetation right on Puget Sound in Discovery Park. The Green Seattle Partnership supports an amazing suite of enthusiastic and dedicated forest stewards, who bring fun and meaning to restoration events.
Volunteers got to choose between cutting and planting live willow stakes, planting pots, digging a hole or… hauling beach logs! Besides running around on a mulch pile and driving carts, carrying sticks and logs are definitely top choice activities at Squad - and these logs were big! While useful to maintain on the beach, some were moved trailside to prevent illicit vehicle-driving down the walking path along the shore. We look forward to returning to this site, including summertime when we can swim afterwards.
November 2021 is the Homeschool Stewardship Squad’s 10th ANNIVERSARY! Come on out and celebrate in good company with some good ol’ dirty work outside in nature.
