Planting native wetland in the muddy parts of the lovely West Duwamish Greenbelt was good fun. After a brief intro on species and spacing, the kids especially enjoyed eyeing the mucky expanse to choose a suitable planting spot for their sedge (Carex sp.) and soft rush (Juncus effusus). Shovels in!
Trail work with the Washington Trails Association
Stewardship Squad is building steam, working out on the Evans Creek Preserve trail again with the Washington Trails Association. The children were very inspired to meet the legendary volunteer Pete who has over 1,000 work parties under his belt. There was much talk of working to earn their five-work-party hard hats with their name on it.
Potting at the Wetland Plant Nursery
King Conservation District's wetland plant nursery was a joy for the children to discover. The flooded beds of native species were as fascinating as the potting was fun. And a beautiful day to boot!
The First Homeschool Stewardship Squad! WA Trails Asscn. at Evans Creek Preserve, Issaquah
A terrific inaugural event! We began with the WA Trails Association, led by Krista Dooley. The children hiked through the mud to transplant sturdy native sword ferns, Polystichum munitum from the forest to the edge of the new trail. They learned about the proper crown placement when planting, digging appropriate root balls and erosion-control techniques. It will be exciting to return to this new park when it officially opens to visit our work!
